Live up to the Expectation of Others or Be Authentically Alive

We spend so much of our lives trying to meet the expectations of teachers, parents, family, bosses, and society.. As we go through the transition of retirement and aging, we can struggle to find a purpose. Our identities tied to what we did for a living. In Okinawa, Japan they do not have a word for retirement. Instead, they have the word ikigai. It roughly translates to “the reason you wake up in the morning” There is a difference between living and being alive. To feel alive we need to find and be true to our authentic selves. We need to find our purpose.

Finding Purpose by Creating Mental Wealth

One of the keys to finding authentic selves and our personal purpose is by learning how to create mental wealth. This process will help us better understand ourselves. It is critical to nourish our physical being with movement and food and to nourish our mental being with new ideas, discovery, and continuous learning. Learning that stirs and excites us to change and grow.
As we build mental wealth, we begin to get excited by the possibilities each and every day.

Old Age Is Inevitable. Aging Is A Choice

We will all get older; however, how we age physically and mentally is a choice. Disease, disorders, ailments are always possible; however,

Over 90% of our health and longevity is in our hands.
Sanjay Gupta - Keeping Sharp Build a Better Brain At Any Age

Some people suffer from self-directed agism. What message do we hear as we look at ourselves in a mirror? Do we embrace the greying hair and wrinkles or just think we are getting old. The transitions are part of who we are, they do not define how we live.

postcards of our lives

Throughout our lives we take pictures to commemorate an occasion or a trip. While our gallery is filled with pictures, our lives are missing the meaning behind the pictures.

How would you describe a postcard moment and how the picture captures personal meaning?

If someone was looking at your photo journals, what would they learn about who you really are?

Relevance

Ever feel that you are no longer relevant? This can lead to feeling that your life lacks purpose and loneliness. We all want to feel like we’re making a contribution to ourselves, our families, and our community. Creating mental wealth is key.

write your own legacy

How would you want others to remember you? To find purpose in our lives we need to start by looking back from our death and defining a life worth living.
Retirement can be a significant part of our lives. It is up to us to decide who we want to be and take control of our destiny.
A legacy is a celebration of our lives. We need to celebrate who we are and the purpsoe we have created.

Like financial debt, we can create mental debt that steals our ability to live freely and well.
Stress, anxiety, depression, irrelevance, and loneliness are some examples of liabilities that can spiral us into mental debt and vulnerability.
